Equine Influenza

These web pages contain information on the national response and eradication of equine influenza in Australia.

Horse and donkey owners still need to be vigilant. If you suspect equine influenza in your horse(s) contact your vet or DPI on 1800 675 888. It is an offence not to report.

Situation Update

Australia is officially free from equine influenza.

Since the last positive case in December 2007 authorities have continued surveillance in both previously infected and unaffected areas of Australia. After almost 79,000 laboratory tests and the clearance of 600 suspected properties, it is officially declared that Australia is free of equine influenza.

To satisfy World Animal Health Organisation (OIE) requirements, Australia will have to maintain increased surveillance for equine influenza until the end of 2008, after which normal surveillance will apply.
